Subject: crash losing newsgroups?
Date: Thu, 19 Mar 2026 10:16:40 +0000
Windows 10-64, TB 140.7.1esr (64-bit)

I just had to crash the computer with the power button (something
full-screen wasn't responding, and ctrl-alt-delete didn't work either).
TB would have been open, probably on a newsgroup on my current server.

When it came up again, the current server had no newsgroups. (The dead
one still had some!)

Looking in my profile folder, under News\<current server>, there were
sets of mostly three files for each 'group; I resubscribed to them, and
was relieved to see my "keep" (star) choices had not been lost. However,
the "read" status had - all posts showed as unread. So I've just
labouriously done a lot of "mark read" for posts prior to yesterday (not
_too_ bad - I only take 18 'groups, at least 3 of which are empty, and
about four moribund).

I do back up my profile once a week, so presumably could have restored
from that, but (as I usually do it on a Monday) I'd have lost three days
- or would I?

Anyone know what happened (and anything I can do to prevent it happening
again? Anything I should have done differently?
